What you will learn
- What ESD is, where static comes from and what it does to components
- ESD safety precautions in practice
- Through-hole and surface mount package styles, purpose and polarity

Prerequisites and materials
- No prerequisites unless the course description below names one. Some modules assume an earlier one in the series.
- Included the student manual, the practical materials used in class and the Blackfox certificate.
Course outline
Part 1ESD
Three to four hours. Can be taken on its own or with the component recognition half.
Part 2Component recognition
Four to five hours. Visual aids and a component schematic chart are included.

Objectives

- State the effects of ESD on electronic components
- Demonstrate ESD safety precautions
- Implement a personal program to eliminate ESD failures
- Successfully pass a written exam with a score of 80% or better

- Common terminology and an introduction to electronic components
- Through-hole and Surface Mount package styles, basic purpose and orientation/polarity for the following types of components:
- Resistors & Capacitors
- Inductors, Coils & Chokes
- Diodes, Fuses & Transistors
- Connectors, Headers & Sockets
- Integrated Circuits (IC)
- Crystals, Oscillators & Transformers
- Visual aids and a component schematic chart are included
Upon successfully completing this learning activity, operators will demonstrate the ability to:
- Identify information available on a Bill of Materials (BOM) and/or work instruction
- Identify selected components using their common names
- List common reference designators
- Identify polarity/orientation markings
