Who should attend

Experienced solderers proving they know the correct way to achieve a quality soldered connection — and the people who inspect them.

  • Operators and technicians who solder production assemblies to a class requirement
  • Inspectors and quality staff who inspect to J-STD-001 without soldering themselves
  • Manufacturing and process engineers who own the soldering process and its documentation
  • Supplier quality staff who audit soldered work against the standard

What you will learn

  • The materials, methods and acceptance criteria for soldered electrical assemblies
  • Wire and terminal assembly and soldering
  • Bare PCB damage, conformal coating, encapsulation and staking adhesives
  • Through hole and surface mount soldering, including fine pitch
  • Inspecting assemblies to Class 3 requirements

Prerequisites and materials

  • Prerequisites basic soldering skills and manufacturing experience for the CIS and CIT levels. A soldering background is preferred for CSE.
  • Included the standard at its current revision, the student workbook, the workmanship samples used in class, the exam fee and the certificate.

Course outline

Module 1Overview of J-STD-001 requirements

Mandatory for CIS. The overall introduction and general requirements. One day.

Module 2Terminal and post soldering

Wires and terminals, with practical exercises. One day.

Module 3PCB requirements and adhesives

Bare PCB damage, conformal coating, encapsulation and staking. Required for modules 4, 5 and 6. One and a half hours.

Module 4Through hole component soldering

With practical exercises. One day.

Module 5Surface mount component soldering

Includes fine pitch soldering, with practical exercises. One day.

Module 6Inspection

Certification and validity

CIS

Certified IPC Specialist

An IPC issued Certified IPC Specialist credential, with a traceable certificate number recorded against your name and company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. Renewal is a shorter course covering revision changes. We send a reminder before the credential expires.

CSE

Certified Standards Expert

An IPC issued Certified Standards Expert credential for detailed knowledge of the standard itself, aimed at engineers and quality staff rather than line operators.

Certification valid two years from the exam date, renewed through a shorter revision course. Teaching and certifying others requires the Certified IPC Trainer credential instead.

CIT

Certified IPC Trainer

An IPC issued Certified IPC Trainer credential, which allows you to teach the standard and certify specialists inside your own company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. Renewal is a shorter course and also requires evidence that you have taught. Let the credential lapse and your company loses the ability to certify its own specialists until it is renewed.

Two ways to take this course

  • At a center

    Longmont, Phoenix, Guadalajara, Querétaro

Bench access, workmanship samples and magnification provided. Best fit for one to four people.

  • At your facility

    No travel, familiar location

The instructor comes to you. Same assemblies and same IPC criteria, taught at your own facility, so your team doesn't travel.

Course description

The purpose of this course is to present the materials, methods and acceptance criteria for producing soldered electrical assemblies. This course is a mix of lecture and hands-on designed as a certification for experienced solderers to prove they understand the correct way to achieve quality soldered connections.

The IPC J-STD-001 is not a basic hand soldering course. This course requires that participants understand the basic concepts and materials associated with hand soldering and have electronics manufacturing soldering experience. If students have not previously performed soldering activities, additional training will be necessary prior to attending this course. Blackfox recommends our applicable soldering series modules for remedial study.

Participants must be able to read and proficiently interpret the language the class and exams are presented in. Exams are available in limited additional languages upon request. Successful passing of written and practical exams is required to attain certification. Two attempts at any exam are included in tuition paid. Additional charges will apply for more than two exam attempts.

Course structure

CIS students can attend all or some of the following modules, CIT and CSE will attend all:

Module 1 – (mandatory for CIS) 1 day

Overview of J-STD-001 requirements (the overall introduction and general requirements).

Module 2 – (optional for CIS) 1 day Terminal and Post Soldering

Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Wires and Terminals and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills.

Module 3 – (optional for CIS) 1.5 Hours PCB Requirements & Adhesives

Study the requirements for bare PCB damage along with conformal coating, encapsulation and staking adhesives. This module is required if taking modules 4, 5 & 6.

Module 4 – (optional for CIS) 1 day Through Hole Component Soldering

Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Through Hole connections and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills.

Module 5 – (optional for CIS) 1 day Surface Mount Component Soldering

Study of the J-STD requirements applicable to the assembly and soldering of Surface Mount components and practical exercises for development and demonstration of soldering and inspection skills. This includes fine pitch soldering.

Module 6 – (optional for CIS) 1 day Inspection Module

Study of the theory and application of all inspection requirements of the J-STD-001. This module is designed for students that inspect to the J-STD-001 but do not solder. They will be required to perform an inspection of modules 2-5 assemblies per Class 3 requirements.

Note: To certify to Module 1 and 6 only, the learner is required to attend the lecture portion of Modules 2-5 and complete a module 6 written and visual inspection exam.
