Who should attend

People building cable and harness assemblies that have to survive the vibration and thermal cycling of getting to space and working there.

  • Operators and technicians who build harnesses for space and high-reliability programmes
  • Inspectors and quality staff who accept space-grade cable work
  • Manufacturing and process engineers who have to meet requirements above the base standard

What you will learn

  • The additional requirements the space addendum places over the base standard
  • Assembling and installing three complete cables, then routing and fastening them into a chassis
  • Soldering, cup terminals, crimping, machine contacts, insulated lugs and IDC connections
  • Wire splices, coax connectors and shield terminations
  • Routing with ty-wraps and lacing cord, shielding, braid, shrink tubing, and testing the finished product

Prerequisites and materials

  • Prerequisites a current certification in this programme. Recertification renews the credential you hold rather than awarding a new one.
  • Included the standard at its current revision, the student workbook, the workmanship samples used in class, the exam fee and the certificate.

Certification and validity

CIS

Certified IPC Specialist

An IPC issued Certified IPC Specialist credential, with a traceable certificate number recorded against your name and company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. We send a reminder before the credential expires.

CIT

Certified IPC Trainer

An IPC issued Certified IPC Trainer credential, which allows you to teach the standard and certify specialists inside your own company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. Renewal requires evidence that you have taught. Let the credential lapse and your company loses the ability to certify its own specialists until it is renewed.

Note: To be eligible for recertification, the CIT must have certified a minimum of 5 students in at least 1 class per year of certification in any of the programs the CIT is certified in.

Course description

IPC/WHMA-A-620 Space addendum provides additional requirements over those published in the IPC/WHMA-A-620 to ensure the performance of cable and wire harness assemblies that must survive the vibration and thermal cyclic environments getting to and operating in space. This course is supported by actual cable building exercises and concludes with a qualifying examination.

This course is for students who are currently certified in the IPC/WHMA-A-620 Space Addendum but need to renew within 6 months before expiration to keep current in the program without interruption. This course provides a thorough review of the document and updated information on policies and program requirements.

Participants must be able to read and proficiently interpret the language the class and exams are presented in. Exams are available in limited additional languages upon request. Successful passing of written and practical exams is required to attain certification. Two attempts at any exam are included in tuition paid. Additional charges will apply for more than two exam attempts.

Course structure

Students will demonstrate the ability to assemble and install two complete cables. This will involve soldering, cup terminals, crimping, machine contacts, insulated lugs, IDC connections, wire splices, coax connectors, shield terminations, including routing using tywraps/lacing cord, shielding, braid and shrink tubing and testing of the final product.

This IS NOT a stand-alone course. It must be completed in conjunction with the IPC/WHMA-A-620 base class. Not available for CSE certification.
