Blackfox training · ESD and component recognition

Component Series

Component identification, marking and handling across package types.

  • Two days
  • English and Español

Who should attend

Operators who have to name a part, find it on a bill of materials and read its value off the part itself.

  • Operators and technicians who pick, place and check components
  • Inspectors and quality staff who verify a build against its bill of materials
  • Buyers and incoming inspection who order against a reference designator

What you will learn

  • Common terminology and an overview of electronic components
  • Through-hole and surface mount package styles, purpose, orientation and polarity
  • Finding what you need on a bill of materials or a work instruction
  • Common reference designators
  • Reading a value from colour codes and marking codes

Prerequisites and materials

  • No prerequisites unless the course description below names one. Some modules assume an earlier one in the series.
  • Included the student manual, the practical materials used in class and the Blackfox certificate.

Course outline

Part 1Component recognition

Four to five hours.

Part 2Electronic component identification

One to two days, adding value identification and conversions. Either part can be split into through-hole only or surface mount only on request.

Certification and validity

Operator

Operator level

The student manual and a Blackfox certification, issued once you pass the written exam.

Certification valid two years from the exam date.

Three ways to take this course

  • At a center

    Longmont, Phoenix, Guadalajara, Querétaro

Bench access and magnification provided. Best fit for one to four people.

  • Live online

    English and Español

Same instructor, same exam. Best fit for distributed teams.

  • At your facility

    No travel, familiar location

The instructor comes to you. The same assemblies and the same criteria, taught at your own facility, so your team doesn't travel.

Topics covered

  • Common terminology and an introduction to electronic components
  • Through-hole and Surface Mount package styles, basic purpose and orientation/polarity for the following types of components:
    • Resistors & Capacitors
    • Inductors, Coils & Chokes
    • Diodes, Fuses & Transistors
    • Connectors, Headers & Sockets
    • Integrated Circuits (IC)
    • Crystals, Oscillators & Transformers
  • Visual aids and a component schematic chart are included

Upon successfully completing this learning activity, operators will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Identify information available on a Bill of Materials (BOM) and/or work instruction
  • Identify selected components using their common names
  • List common reference designators
  • Identify polarity/orientation markings

What the learner receives

  • Student manual
  • Blackfox Certification, after successfully passing a written exam with a score of 80% or better

Course can be split into Through-Hole only or Surface Mount only upon request.

Electronic Component Identification

The objective of this course is to supply students with the extensive study of through-hole and surface mount components that are used in electronic assembly. The student will gain advanced knowledge on major through-hole and surface mount component packages and their reference designators, markings, orientation, polarity and the techniques to correctly identify and convert color coded and stamped values on resistors, capacitors, inductors.

Topics covered

  • Common terminology and an overview of electronic components
  • Through-hole and Surface Mount package styles, purpose, orientation/polarity, and specific value identification and conversions for the following types of components:
    • Resistors & Capacitors
    • Inductors, Coils & Chokes
    • Diodes, Fuses & Transistors
    • Connectors, Headers & Sockets
    • Integrated Circuits (IC)
    • Crystals, Oscillators & Transformers
  • Visual aids and a component schematic chart are included

Upon successfully completing this learning activity, operators will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Identify information available on a BOM and or work instruction
  • Identify selected components using their common names
  • List common reference designators
  • Identify polarity/orientation markings
  • Identify a component’s value by deciphering color codes/marking codes

What the learner receives

  • Student manual
  • Practice Sheets
  • Blackfox Certification, after successfully passing a written & practical exam with a combined score of 80% or better

Course can be split into Through-Hole only or Surface Mount only upon request.
