In short

IPC-A-610 is the industry standard for the acceptability of electronic assemblies. This course teaches inspectors and operators how to judge solder joints, hardware, components and cleanliness against the current revision, and ends with the Certified IPC Specialist exam.

Who should attend

Anyone who accepts or rejects a finished assembly, and anyone whose work is judged by that decision.

  • Inspectors and quality staff who sign off assemblies against the standard
  • Operators and technicians who need to know what will pass before it reaches inspection
  • Manufacturing and process engineers who write the workmanship documentation
  • Supplier quality staff who audit contract manufacturers against IPC criteria

What you will learn

  • Reading the standard: target, acceptable, process indicator and defect conditions across all three classes
  • Judging solder joint conditions on through hole, surface mount and BGA assemblies
  • Hardware, terminal and connector acceptance criteria
  • Component damage, marking, orientation and mounting requirements
  • Laminate conditions, cleanliness and coating criteria
  • Applying the correct class for aerospace, defense and medical product

Prerequisites and materials

  • No prerequisites for the CIS level. CIT and recertification have their own prerequisites, listed in the course description below.
  • Included the standard at its current revision, the student workbook, the exam fee and the certificate.

Course outline

Day 1Standard structure and soldering criteria

  • Scope of IPC-A-610 and how it relates to J-STD-001
  • Product classes and the target, acceptable, defect hierarchy
  • Through hole solder joint acceptance
  • Wetting, fillet and hole fill criteria with real samples

Day 2Surface mount, components and hardware

  • Chip, gull wing, J lead and BGA acceptance
  • Component damage, marking and placement
  • Terminals, connectors and mechanical hardware
  • Bench exercises against production samples

Day 3Laminate, cleanliness, coating and the exam

  • Laminate conditions, measling, delamination and weave exposure
  • Cleanliness, residue and conformal coating criteria
  • Review of the sections most often cited in audits
  • Certified IPC Specialist exam, closed book and open book sections

Certification and validity

CIS

Certified IPC Specialist

An IPC issued Certified IPC Specialist credential, with a traceable certificate number recorded against your name and company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. Renewal is a shorter course covering revision changes. We send a reminder before the credential expires.

CIT

Certified IPC Trainer

An IPC issued Certified IPC Trainer credential, which allows you to teach the standard and certify specialists inside your own company.

Certification valid two years from the exam date. Renewal is a shorter course and also requires evidence that you have taught. Let the credential lapse and your company loses the ability to certify its own specialists until it is renewed.

CSE

Certified Standards Expert

An IPC issued Certified Standards Expert credential for detailed knowledge of the standard itself, aimed at engineers and quality staff rather than line operators.

Certification valid two years from the exam date, renewed through a shorter revision course. Teaching and certifying others requires the Certified IPC Trainer credential instead.

Course description

The education and training goal of this program is to improve individual “discrimination” skills; that is, to improve accuracy of discrimination between “acceptable” or “unacceptable” completed electronic printed circuit board assemblies per the IPC-A-610 series. This program will also teach individuals the reasons for the accept/reject criteria to enhance their motivation and ability to apply the discrimination criteria consistently and correctly.

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, students will be able to make correct “accept/reject” decisions for finished electronic assemblies based on the acceptability requirements of IPC-A-610.

Participants must be able to read and proficiently interpret the language the class and exams are presented in. Exams are available in limited additional languages upon request. Successful passing of written and practical exams is required to attain certification. Two attempts at any exam are included in tuition paid. Additional charges will apply for more than two exam attempts.

Asked often

Is IPC-A-610 the same as J-STD-001?

No. IPC-A-610 covers the acceptability of a finished assembly, so it is an inspection standard. J-STD-001 covers the process requirements for producing that assembly, so it is a build standard. Teams that both build and inspect usually certify to both.

Do I need to buy the standard separately?

No. A copy of the current revision is included with the course, along with the workbook and the workmanship samples used in class.

What is the difference between CIS and CIT here?

CIS certifies you as a specialist who can apply the standard. CIT certifies you as a trainer who can teach and certify specialists inside your own company. CIT is five days and requires production experience.

Can you teach this against our own workmanship documentation?

Yes, in an on site session. The certification content stays as IPC requires it, and we add your own assemblies and acceptance documents to the bench exercises.

What happens if someone does not pass the exam?

One retake is included. The instructor reviews the sections missed before the retake, which is usually scheduled within two weeks.

Teams that take this usually take these next

  • IPC certification

    IPC J-STD-001

Requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies. This course certifies experienced solderers against the materials, methods and acceptance criteria of J-STD-001, combining classroom study with bench work on real assemblies.

  • IPC certification

    IPC 7711/7721

Rework, modification and repair of electronic assemblies. IPC 7711/7721 is the industry standard for removing and replacing components and repairing circuitry with minimum impact on quality. The class is roughly 85% hands on work, graded as you go.

  • IPC certification

    IPC-A-600

Acceptability of printed boards, external and internal conditions. This course certifies inspectors to identify characteristics inside and on the surface of a printed circuit board, from base material and plated through holes to internal copper and internal planes.

The instructors are extremely knowledgeable of the subject matter and presentation, workbook, and workmanship sample materials were first class.
