What you will learn

  • The three main elements of a print, and what each line on it represents
  • Reading the title block, the notes and the change block
  • Identifying wire insulation and gauges, and using stripping tools by hand and by machine
  • Inspecting stripped wire for damage, and applying proper tinning technique
  • Identifying terminal types, using hand crimp tools, and recognising an acceptable crimp

Prerequisites and materials

  • No prerequisites unless the course description below names one. Some modules assume an earlier one in the series.
  • Included the student manual, the practical materials used in class and the Blackfox certificate.

Course outline

Part 1Print reading

Six hours.

Part 2Wire preparation and crimping

Six to eight hours, seventy to eighty per cent of it hands-on.

Certification valid two years from the exam date.

The purpose of this course is to provide operators with the comprehensive skills required to read and interpret cable assembly prints. This course is widely recognized in the industry and will benefit learners with little or no knowledge in print reading, or learners who are seeking skill enhancements.

Objectives

Upon successfully completing this learning activity,. Learners will obtain and demonstrate the ability to:

  • State the three main elements of a print
  • Identify what each line on the print represents
  • State the common print sizes
  • Interpret information found in the title block of prints
  • Identify what notes are and interpret information found in all notes
  • Interpret information found in the change block
  • Look at a print and understand how a finished assembly conforms to the print
  • Successfully pass a written and practical exam with a combined score of 80% or better

Wire Preparation & Crimping

The purpose of this course is to promote the best crimping practices and enhance the operator’s fine-motor skills essential for acceptable wire preparation and crimping techniques.

This course is widely recognized in the industry and will benefit learners with little or no knowledge in crimping, or learners who are seeking skill enhancements.

Objectives

Upon successfully completing this learning activity, learners will obtain and demonstrate the ability to:

  • Wire Preparation
  • Identify wire insulation and gauges
  • Correctly use hand tools
  • Correctly identify wire stripping tools, hand and machine
  • Inspect work for conformance to the standards
  • Apply inspection techniques for wire stripping for damage
  • Apply proper tinning techniques
  • Crimping
  • Identify various types of terminals
  • Correctly use hand crimp tools
  • State the theory of machine crimping
  • Identify acceptable crimps
