What you will learn
- Choosing the correct solder tip, and the care and use of the iron
- Forming, mounting and placing components, through hole and surface mount
- Creating acceptable joints to industry standards, including fine pitch
- Stripping, tinning and connecting stranded wire, and terminations on a variety of terminals
- Inspecting for conformance, touch-up and rework, in tin/lead and lead-free
Prerequisites and materials
- No prerequisites unless the course description below names one. Some modules assume an earlier one in the series.
- Included the student manual, the practical materials used in class and the Blackfox certificate.
Course outline
Part 1Through hole soldering
One day.
Part 2Surface mount soldering
One day.
Part 3Surface mount fine pitch soldering
Four hours. Surface mount soldering is a prerequisite for this part.
Part 4Terminal and post soldering
One day.
Part 5Lead free soldering and rework
Two days.

Through Hole Soldering
This course is a must for anyone that touches a soldering iron. The purpose of the course is to promote best manufacturing practices and develop the individual’s fine-motor skills, which are essential to building acceptable Through Hole assemblies.
Blackfox is widely recognized in the industry for designing courses with hands-on, practical application for our learners. This course will benefit learners with little or no knowledge in Through Hole soldering, as well as learners who are seeking skill enhancements. Workmanship for this course is based on IPC standards, although Blackfox can customize the course to reflect all industry workmanship standards and individual customer requirements.
Objectives
This is an in-depth study of all elements associated with through hole assembly, and soldering skills and techniques. Upon successfully completing this learning activity, learners will obtain and demonstrate the ability to:

This course is widely recognized in the industry, and will benefit learners with little or no knowledge in soldering as well as learners who are seeking skill enhancements.
Objectives
Upon successfully completing this learning activity, learners will obtain and demonstrate the ability to:
- Identify the correct solder tip for the task
- Demonstrate proper care & use of the soldering iron/tip
- Correctly use hand tools
- Correctly strip, tin, and connect stranded wires
- Create acceptable solder terminations on a variety of terminals
- Create acceptable terminations for cup solder connections
- Inspect work for conformance to industry standards
- Rework non-conforming connections
- Successfully pass a written & practical exam with a combined score of 80% or better

Lead Free Soldering & Rework
This hands-on course will provide your operator(s) the knowledge and materials necessary to ensure quality skills in soldering lead-free components and assemblies using lead-free solders. The learner will overcome the fear and uncertainty concerning lead-free soldering and learn the terminology, the flow characteristics, and the changes in the appearance of lead free solder joints. This certification course covers the latest requirements for lead free soldering in detail, and the touch up of Through Hole and Surface Mount components. The course is designed to meet the needs of learners with little or no knowledge in soldering, or individuals wishing to enhance their Through Hole and Surface Mount soldering skills. This course also includes fine pitch technology.
Objectives
Upon successfully completing this learning activity, operators will be qualified to solder and inspect lead free solder connections. They will also obtain and demonstrate the ability to:
- Identify the correct solder tip for the task
- Correctly use hand tools
- Correctly form and insert through hole components
- Correctly place surface mount components
- Create acceptable solder joints to industry standards
- Inspect work for conformance to the standards
- Perform touch up and rework tasks
- Successfully pass the practical and written exam 80% or better
