How to choose the right IPC certification for a career in electronics manufacturing

Master IPC Trainer, Director of Training & Education

Short answer

Choose the standard from the work — soldering points at J-STD-001, inspection at IPC-A-610, harness build at A-620 — and choose the level from what the person has to be allowed to do afterwards. The catalogue is the wrong place to start and the commonest reason teams certify to the wrong standard.

Start from the work rather than from the catalogue. If your team solders, the soldering standard is the one that matters, and the visual acceptance standard is what an inspector downstream will be reading. Certifying to the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake.

Start from the bench, not the catalogue

Write down what the team does in a sentence before you look at a single course code. Almost every wrong enrolment we see started with somebody reading the catalogue first and matching a familiar number to a job it does not describe.

Then decide who will be teaching

A company that trains more than a handful of people a year is usually better served by certifying one trainer than by sending everybody out — and that is a different level, not a different course.
