When many of us think of Memorial Day, we often think of days off from school and work and the beginning of summer. Several Americans will be celebrating this weekend with family barbecues, picnics, pool parties, and all other kinds of fun in the sun.

The Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors Americans who died serving in the US military. The holiday originated in the years following the Civil War, which had claimed more lives than any other conflict in US history. This prompted the establishment of the first national cemeteries in the US. By the late 1860s, Americans started holding springtime tributes, decorating the graves of the fallen soldiers with flowers.

Waterloo, New York, and the Federal Holiday

In 1966, the US government declared Waterloo, New York, the birthplace of Memorial Day because the city hosted an annual community-wide event during which businesses closed, and residents decorated soldiers’ graves with flowers and flags. Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971.

A National Moment of Remembrance

Each year on Memorial Day, a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 pm local time.

The Blackfox Training Institute is approved for the training of veterans and eligible persons under the provisions of Title 38, United States Code, and is recognized by the State of Colorado as an Approved Private Occupational School. These credentials qualify Blackfox as an approved technical training center for eligible veterans wanting to use their GI Bill for education benefits.
